In our increasingly complex world, finding moments of clarity is essential to success in all areas of our lives. As a holistic law and mediation firm based in New York City, we understand the challenges faced by licensed professionals. We work with many accountants, funeral directors, lawyers, and social workers to resolve conflicts out of court so everyone has a more peaceful and productive workplace.
Our proprietary process is based on mediation techniques and trauma-informed services, which we align with applicable laws, rules and regulations. Choice Four of the DIY Conflict Resolution process can help you clear your mind of past errors, fears, and other distractions from what you can change.
Common Techniques to Clear Your Mind
- Cooking or Cleaning – Simple, repetitive tasks allow your mind to focus on the present moment, providing a break from stress and mental clutter. They can also nourish you or reduce distracting physical clutter.
- Drawing, Painting, or Coloring – Artistic expression can help you process complex emotions related to conflict.
- Hiking, Running, or Walking – We often gain mental clarity in fresh air and among the trees.
- Meditation or Prayer – With practice, observing your thoughts can give you greater control over them.
- Playing a Musical Instrument – Music can give you a productive way to share your thoughts while you’re still trying to understand them.
- Swimming or Paddling – Physical exercise causes you to release endorphins. It can also give you a sense of accomplishment that increases your confidence about resolving conflicts.
Cliff’s Story
Cliff has owned his business for several decades. He is tired, and he needs hip surgery. But he is his most reliable employee. As much as he would like to grow his business again, he feels overwhelmed by all the new technology, (electronic) paperwork, laws, rules, regulations, and social changes. Add to these his demands at home: aging parents who can no longer take care of themselves, siblings who are struggling financially, and a long-term partner who wants a different commitment. It’s too much, but if he slows down or takes a break, who is going to hold everything together?
Contrary to what Cliff thought would change his circumstances, slowing down gave him exactly what he needed. It became clearer which of his employees could be cultivated, who needed to go, why his superhero alter-ego was doing more harm than good, and much more.
