Start Planning Now for Sexual Assault Awareness Month Events in 2025

Nance Schick · Apr 30, 2024 ·

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) draws to a close, now is the time to start planning for next year’s events. Every April, individuals and organizations across the United States come together to shed light on the pervasive issue of sexual violence and advocate for its prevention. SAAM is more than just a month-long campaign. It’s an opportunity to initiate lasting change within our workplaces, families, and communities. This is my call for your action.

What does participation in SAAM entail?

There are countless ways to get involved, ranging from hosting educational events to organizing fundraisers or distributing informative materials. Whether you’re a licensed professional or a small business owner in New York, your voice and actions are instrumental in creating a culture of awareness and support. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) shares information on many events to inspire you or that invite your participation.

Who should participate in SAAM events?

The answer is simple: everyone. Sexual violence thrives in environments where it is trivialized or ignored. By engaging individuals from all walks of life, we can cultivate a network of allies dedicated to preventing sexual violence and supporting survivors.

Planning a 2025 SAAM campaign may seem daunting, but with early preparation and collaboration, it becomes an achievable endeavor. Here are some tips to kickstart your planning process:

  1. Build Your Team. Reach out to colleagues, friends, or community organizations that share your passion for preventing sexual violence. Determine what each can and wants to contribute, and set specific measurable goals with deadlines to ensure you are ready before next April.
  2. Communicate (Occasionally) Throughout the Year. Set up clear channels of communication to facilitate coordination and feedback among team members, but don’t overdo it. The goal is to keep the project moving with many people contributing however they can whenever they can.
  3. Assess Community Needs. Conduct surveys, host focus groups, or engage in community outreach to understand the specific needs and preferences of your workplace. Tailor your events to address what your employees think is most relevant.
  4. Prepare a Budget. Explore creative fundraising ideas if necessary. Impactful initiatives don’t always require a hefty budget, and some action is better than none.

Create the Future

The impact of your SAAM efforts extends far beyond statistics or metrics. Within your workplace, you have the opportunity to:

  • Empower survivors
  • Challenge misconceptions
  • Inspire meaningful change

As we bid farewell to SAAM for another year, let’s carry the momentum forward all year and continue our commitment to building safer, more inclusive spaces for all in 2024, 2025, and beyond.
