Frequently-Asked Questions About Our Legal Consultations

Nance Schick · Jan 6, 2025 ·

It can be frightening to realize you might need a legal consultation. Let us put you at ease with these answers to some frequently-asked questions.

Do you charge for a legal consultation?

Yes. We charge $200.00 for a one-hour legal consultation, which includes our discussion of your legal matter, a summary, and and action plan.

Why aren’t your consultations free?

We understand other law firms might offer “free consultations.” They should be telling you up front that they won’t be offering legal advice during the consultation. The purpose of those consultations is to determine, among other things:

  • If anything can be done for you
  • Whether the firm has the competence and resources to pursue your desired actions
  • Whether you are likely to work well together
  • The estimated range of fees

Any time we are discussing the specific facts and circumstances of your New York conflict in an effort to guide you to resolution, you can expect attorneys to charge a fee for their services. We assume several risks when providing legal services, and we provide you knowledge based on many years of education and law practice. You’re not just paying for our time but to also avoid accumulating the years of education and experience we did.

Do you represent small businesses?

Yes. We are a small business, and we frequently represent small businesses in New York or businesses that have employees based here. Whether you need to resolve a penalty, negotiate terms of a contract, prepare for an audit, or write your employee policies, we can probably help. If we can’t, we have deep resources and will help you take the next step.

Have you worked with large corporations?

Yes. Some of the clients that have been with us the longest are huge international and multinational corporations in high-risk industries like building trades, entertainment, licensed professions, and sport.

Are you licensed to practice law outside of New York?

No. Our founder, Nance L. Schick, is the only attorney on staff right now and her license is limited to New York. She is applying for licensure in Virginia. She can also advise on federal laws, such as Title IX and other civil rights laws. Plus, we can provide informal resolution and mediation services online and worldwide. If your needs go beyond our competencies, we will be happy to refer you to one of our trusted collaborators or help you find the resource(s) you need.

Testimonials

[Nance’s] advice has been very comforting and given me confidence and structure to move this along. ~ D.H., Business Owner, NY

Nance and I have been working together for [more than 15 years], and I must say I couldn’t be happier with her perspective, intelligence, and ability to produce exactly what our business calls for. As a company that has no similar footprint, in screening attorneys for counsel we found many who wanted to lump us into categories that made sense to THEIR PRACTICE rather than really listening to who we are and what we do. Nance’s ability to set aside her assumptions and really get into the weeds of our services and the legal aspects of our growth made all the difference. That she does this with an emphasis on looking at the relationships being established and how best to express their spirit contractually makes her one-of-a-kind. I recommend her whole heartedly. ~ T.T., Business Owner, NY

Nance and I met years ago as members of Ladies Who Launch, a women’s entrepreneurial networking group. Over the years she has been a wonderful friend, and legal advisor to me in my many entrepreneurial ventures. Nance brings her wisdom, intelligence and insightful legal counsel to bare in all her endeavors, and I highly recommend her services to every business person. ~ I.S., Business Owner, NY
